Capture the moment—simple photo composition tips for stunning custom magnets!

At Bard & Bloom, we transform your cherished memories into high-quality custom photo magnets. But to make the most of these keepsakes, you’ll want to start with a great photo. Whether you’re working with our 2” x 2” square, 2” x 3” rectangular, or the 2.25” or 2.5” round magnets, these simple composition tips will help you capture crisp, eye-catching images that look fantastic in print.

Keep it simple
The best photos for small magnets have a clear focal point. Avoid cluttered backgrounds or busy scenes that might make it hard to distinguish the subject when printed at a smaller size. A well-lit portrait of a loved one, a favourite pet, or a striking landscape works best.

Think about cropping
Different magnet shapes require different framing approaches:
  • 2” x 2” square magnets: Center your subject and keep them close to the middle to prevent awkward cropping. Symmetry works well here.
  • 2” x 3” rectangle magnets: A vertical or horizontal orientation both work, but consider the rule of thirds (see below) for a balanced look.
  • 2.25” or 2.5” round magnets: Keep the subject in the center, ensuring that no key details will be cropped out when the edges curve.
If you choose a magnet size for a specific photo that we think might look better in a different shape, we’d be happy to change it up. Some photos really look better in the 2” x 3” rectangle vs. the 2” x 2” square.

Use the rule of thirds
This simple trick helps create visually interesting compositions. Imagine your photo divided into nine equal sections with two vertical and two horizontal lines. Placing your subject where these lines intersect can make the image more dynamic. Most smartphone cameras allow you to turn on a grid to help with this!

Focus on lighting
Good lighting can make or break a photo. Natural light is your best friend! Take advantage of soft morning or evening light to avoid harsh shadows and try to avoid shooting directly into the sun. The sun at the photographer’s back or 45° angle is best to avoid toomuch light overwhelming the subject. If you’re indoors, position your subject near a window, at a 45° angle or with sheer curtains diffusing the light, for a natural glow. Avoid using direct flash without bouncing it off the ceiling or a reflector, as this can create unflattering highlights or harsh shadows.

Mind the background
A clean background keeps the focus on your subject. Try to avoid distracting elements like cluttered rooms or bright colours that clash with the main subject. If possible, use a simple backdrop like a neutral wall, sky, or blurred landscape. With today’s phone cameras, you can even control the ƒ-stop or depth of field to get that “bokeh” or blurred background. Always a cool look.

Capture close-ups for maximum detail
Since magnets are small, distant subjects can get lost in the final product. Fill the frame with faces, pets, or details you want to highlight. For group shots, make sure everyone is close together, so their expressions remain clear in the final print. Remember that magnets are small reminders of a great day vs. a crisp poster-size portrait.

Steady your shot
Blurry photos won’t translate well to print. Use both hands to steady your phone or camera, use a monopod or tripod, or set it on a stable surface. If possible, use a timer or burst mode to get the sharpest shot. (If you have an Apple Watch, you can use it to trigger your iPhone’s shutter. I don’t use Android, but I’m sure there is probably an equivalent fancy trick with those devices too!)

Consider contrast and colour
Vibrant colours and strong contrasts pop beautifully on printed magnets. If your photo feels too dark or washed out, try adjusting brightness and contrast slightly before uploading. Avoid filters that over-soften or distort details. We can also make slight edits and adjustments to your photos if they aren’t printing at top quality.

Test it on your screen
Before submitting your photo, zoom out on your phone or computer to roughly the size of the magnet. If your subject still looks clear and well-framed, you’re good to go!

Have fun and capture those glimmers!
The best photos are the ones that bring back warm, fuzzy memories. Whether it’s a goofy pet expression, a family full of cheesy grins, or a stunning winter sunset, focus on moments that make you smile every time you see them.

With these simple composition tips, your custom photo magnets will showcase your favourite memories beautifully.
